Endowment & Scholarships

A strong endowment at Howard Payne University is necessary to provide a financial base that will sustain the university’s mission for generations to come.

During Phase I of the campaign, the university will raise $3.2 million to grow the current endowment to nearly $50 million.

Key areas that need philanthropic support through our endowment include:

  • school endowments;
  • departmental endowments;
  • deans’ chairs;
  • faculty chairs;
  • professorships;
  • speaker series;
  • professional development programs;
  • student/faculty travel programs;
  • student academic support programs;
  • honors programs; and
  • scholarships and other financial aid.

Examples of scholarships and financial aid provided by our endowment include:

Academy of Freedom Awards

  • Academy Honors Program Scholarships There are three levels of awards ranging from $15,500 per year to full tuition. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $50,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year. An endowment of $50,000 will produce approximately $2,500 to be used for scholarships annually.

Merit Scholarship Awards — Awarded to students entering Howard Payne University:

  • PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR At present, this scholarship award is $15,000 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $50,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year. An endowment of $50,000 will produce approximately $2,500 to be used for scholarships annually.
  • DEAN’S SCHOLAR At present, this scholarship award is $12,000 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $30,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.
  • UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR At present, this scholarship award is $11,000 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $25,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.
  • YELLOW JACKET SCHOLAR At present, this scholarship award is $10,000 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $20,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.
  • HEART OF TEXAS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship targets students who are immediate high school graduates from Brown County or one of the seven adjoining counties (Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, McCulloch, Mills and San Saba counties). At present, this scholarship award is $13,500 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $15,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.
  • ACADEMIC INCENTIVE GRANT This grant targets students who demonstrate strong academic promise and have the ability to pursue higher-level academic work with a strong work ethic. At present, this scholarship award is $4,000 per year. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $15,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.

Funding for Students with Financial Need

HPU Grant This grant is awarded to students who have a portion of their financial need unmet after grants, scholarships, loans and work opportunities have been awarded. Students receiving this award may represent a variety of academic preparation levels and performance with federally documented financial need as the primary factor for consideration. Awards from this fund are at the discretion of Howard Payne University’s director of financial aid and are subject to available funding. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with $15,000 or make a gift of any amount for the current year.

Departmental Scholarships

Scholarships may be established by naming a particular field of study as the priority for student awards. These scholarships are generally awarded by the various academic departments. Donors may establish a named endowment beginning with a minimum gift of $15,000 or make a gift of any amount to add to a current endowed fund. Scholarship examples might include a scholarship benefiting students with a specified major within one of the university’s six schools: Business, Christian Studies, Education, Humanities, Music and Fine Arts, or Science and Mathematics.
